Stone men

A place of strength in Meltina

The Men of Stone are located in a particular place, a real place of energy but also one of the most spectacular viewpoints of the Sarentino Alps, from which the look hugs all the Dolomites up to the Marmolada and the Ortles, the highest peak of the South Tyrol.
During your holiday in Meltina you need absolutely to embark on an excursion to see this expanse populated by over 100 stone men made of stacked sandstone plates that stand upright like a host of soldiers.
Their history and their meaning are not clear. Did the stone men once serve to indicate the way? Or maybe it was the bored pastors who built them? Would the stone men indicate a haunt of witches or a place of cult for the Celts? Inlays in rocks and flint tools actually indicate that the place was frequented since the Stone Age and then also in the Middle Ages. A court document of 1540 shows that in this place, about 500 years ago, witches and satanic festivals were celebrated and, in this regard, horrifying stories are told about rituals to trigger frightful storms, during which children were eaten. Ancient inlays in the rocks suggest that centuries ago the lookout of stone men was a Celtic place of worship.
